Dr. Conrad Murray, who stands accused of the felony charge of involuntary manslaughter in the untimely death of pop icon Michael Jackson is finally scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
Dr. Murray, a cardiologist and Jackson's live-in private physician at the time of his death on June 25, 2009, was arrested for allegedly administering an alleged lethal cocktail of drugs, most notably, propofol a sleeping agent that should only be distributed in a hospital and under the caution and guidance of an anesthesiologist. The good doctor has thus far pleaded not guilty to the accusations.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor will begin the hearing in which he will determine if there is enough evidence against Dr. Murray to hold a trial before a jury.
The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office will use the hearings to present its theory of how the King of Pop died. Other highlights of the hearings could include testimony on what Murray told investigators and other medical expert testimonies on what could have led to Jackson's death.
The hearings could last as long as two weeks, according to legal experts.
L.A. County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons told Southern California Public Radio regarding the hearing:
"You have to remember, it involves a lot of medical issues, and those are very complex issues. So the prosecutor has said in court that he'll be calling about 30 witnesses give or take."
According to court documents, Dr. Murray has admitted giving Jackson propofol but not to the extent of causing the mega star's death. Dr. Murray's lawyers plan to defend their client against a charge of involuntary manslaughter by claiming that the pop icon killed himself when he self-administered a large dose of propofol, a surgical anesthetic Jackson used as a sleep aid to combat chronic insomnia.
Dr. Murray faces up to four years in prison if convicted.
