Nursing moms in London were lining up over the weekend, no, not for a shoe or clothing sale but to sell their breast milk to a popular London ice cream parlor.
The company Trendy London placed an ad online asking women to donate their breast milk which was used to make their hottest best seller yet, the "Baby Gaga" which sold out just as soon as they launched it Friday.
But not so fast, there were two complaints lodged Monday with regards to the dessert's safety. The complainants are contesting whether the London ice cream shop should sell a product made from human bodily fluids particularly since viruses such as Hepatitis C can be transmitted through breast milk. The product was confiscated by Britain's Food Standards Agency amid concerns about its safety.
The ice cream maker argues that the milk donors went through all of the proper screening procedures, which are also in place for those who give blood. The mother's milk was then pasteurized, churned with vanilla pods and finally topped off with a lemon zest.
The manufacturer served the quirky mammary-based concoction in a fancy martini glass for 14 pounds or $22.50 a serving.
Matt O'Connor, who owns the company, stands by his product wholeheartedly and touts that the newfangled mother's milk ice cream is "organic, free-range and totally natural. If it's good enough for our kids, it's good enough for our ice cream," he told the Associated Press.
You're probably gagging right about now while wondering why on earth those health guidelines weren't in place on Friday before countless folks consumed the product like wildfire. Well, according to the country's Food Standards Agency, there are no specific laws that prohibit the sale of human milk products. Breast milk product manufacturers must comply with the general food safety laws that ensure safe consumption, so until there were complaints made, nothing was done to stop the sale of the ice cream.
The UK's BBC reported that nursing mom Victoria Hiley has already gone through her first go-round of breast milk donation which earned her $24 per every 10 ounces she squirted out but for now, she is going to be put out to pasture until further notice.
