Touiteur 2.0 Twitter client gets Gingerbread support, ads in full-featured free version

Touiteur 2.0 for Android screenshotJust a few days after Seesmic for Android received a big update, today it's Touiteur's turn. Touiteur has reached version 2.0, which brings a whole range of enhancements, improvements and fixes, though without any revolutionary new features baked in.

What is groundbreaking is that the free version of Touiteur is now as full-featured as the paid version. Previously, the paid version gave you access to certain features that were unavailable for free. From now on, the distinction between the versions will be made by the insertion of promoted tweets into your timeline (or lack thereof). So, the paid version will be ad-free, while the free version will bring certain promoted tweets to your attention. These, however, aren't Twitter's Promoted Tweets, they are served by a company called 140 Proof.

New widgets are available, as are in-app image previews, a Mute function for users or specific text (think annoying hashtags). There's also a new fourth column to handle lists, search, favorites or conversations. Touiteur now shows you if a user is following you while you're viewing his or her profile, you can see replies to a specific tweet, see native retweets in Mentions (this is off by default and needs to be enabled in Settings). A tiny avatar of the person retweeting a tweet is also shown alongside the picture of the retweeted person, swipe navigation between columns has been improved, and all favorites are now shown and not just the most recent 20. You can now change your Bio and location from within Touiteur, and long-press the hardware Search button to search Twitter in Touiteur (this was previously blocked). What's more, Touiteur 2.0 is Android 2.3 Gingerbread-ready.

Touiteur 2.0 is now available in the Android Market, in both free and paid form.
