James Rhodes: Bullets and Lullabies | review

(Warner)

With a TV series on Sky Arts, a recent BBC4 Chopin documentary and a high-profile social networking identity, pianist James Rhodes is forging his own way in the classical world and breaking rules like the most stylish, gifted and daredevil boy in class. This double concept CD offers a glimpse of "what it's like to be in my head for 24 hours" ? a troubled place in recent years, from which music has rescued him ? or, if you prefer, a contrast of musical uppers and downers, or "cocaine or benzos", as he puts it. Short works by Chopin, Ravel, Debussy, Beethoven, Brahms and others rub shoulders. Rhodes plays with reckless high-wire energy, expression and panache.
