Google Hotpot finally (and fully) merged into Places

It's taken months of confused looks, but Google's finally seen the light. Hotpot, which has been a universally scorned moniker for a service that just about everyone called Places, is now simply lumped in with Places.

The actual differences between Hotpot and Places were nearly non-existent, especially when dealing with the mobile aspect (which was even worse, since finding and rating restaurants and other venues is typically done on a smartphone, not a desktop). When it came down to it, Hotpot was basically just the rating/reviewing system for Places -- so while it probably started off as a separate project, it was destined to be gobbled up by the bigger app from the get go.

So, now that the hideous name is over and done with, Places can go on to gain popularity alongside its older sibling, Latitude -- and we can definitely expect both of them to get a major boost now that check-in deals have been brought into the mix.

Notice from the President on the Continuation of the National Emergency with respect to the Russian Federation

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

On June 21, 2000, the President issued Executive Order 13159 (the "order") blocking property and interests in property of the Government of the Russian Federation that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or control of United States persons that are directly related to the implementation of the Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Russian Federation Concerning the Disposition of Highly Enriched Uranium Extracted from Nuclear Weapons, dated February 18, 1993, and related contracts and agreements (collectively, the "HEU Agreements").  The HEU Agreements allow for the downblending of highly enriched uranium derived from nuclear weapons to low enriched uranium for peaceful commercial purposes.  The order invoked the authority, inter alia, of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1701-1706) and declared a national emergency to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States posed by the risk of nuclear proliferation created by the accumulation of a large volume of weapons usable fissile material in the territory of the Russian Federation.

The national emergency declared on June 21, 2000, must continue beyond June 21, 2011, to provide continued protection from attachment, judgment, decree, lien, execution, garnishment, or other judicial process for the property and interests in property of the Government of the Russian Federation that are directly related to the implementation of the HEU Agreements and subject to U.S. jurisdiction.  Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency with respect to the risk of nuclear proliferation created by the accumulation of weapons usable fissile material in the territory of the Russian Federation.  This notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress.

Target Hires Union Actors For Internal Non-Union Video

Filed under:

If you have been hired at Target Corp. in recent years, chances are you may have endured watching this 13-minute anti-union video which is required viewing for all new employees.

Though Nicky Buggs and Ric Reitz, the two actors in the video seen below, are preaching the pitfalls of joining a union, they are in fact real-life members of a union, according to a story at Salon.

Buggs and Reitz are members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) union. Gawker obtained the video and outlines the details of its anti-union spiel, noting how the video tells employees "you can get more hours" without a union.

The discovery of the video, which was made in 2003, couldn't have happened at a worse time for Target Corp. The company is in the midst of a tense battle with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union who have launched their first pro-union campaign at 27 Target stores in the New York City area. On Friday (June 17), more than 260 workers at the Target store in Valley Stream, New York, will vote on whether to form a union.

Reitz, who comic book fans may recognize as the guy who plays the U.S. president in the new film 'The Green Lantern,' told Salon when he first received the script for the Target video that the content seemed "very awkward." When he expressed his concerns to AFTRA, a representative told him doing the video would not be a problem as long as the information was not "purposefully inaccurate," or Reitz didn't personally take a position, according to Salon's interview with the actor.

Buggs was not available for comment in the Salon article.

And Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder declined to comment on why Target decided to use union actors.

Maybe Target Corp. should consider a sequel in which the actors portrayed are actual store employees. But on second thought, any anti-union propaganda might be a moot point if workers vote to unionize come Friday (June 17).

For an informative analysis of the Target workers' unionizing efforts, see here.

Windows 8 App Store images leaked?

windows 8 app store
Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft's wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today's installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We've got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed -- and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We're also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio -- the game's actual publisher.

It's still early, of course, so it's entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple's legal eagles at bay.

Michael Bubl to fund campaign to identify Vancouver rioters

Canadian singer whose family were caught up in violence wants to help police find those responsible for trashing the city

Crooner Michael Bubl is going vigilante. The easy-listening singer is financing a new ad campaign to hunt down the vandals from last week's Vancouver hockey riots, vowing to help the police make arrests and to make sure the guilty parties receive "a very, very special round of applause". "It was gutless and disgusting behaviour," Bubl said. "I felt sick inside."

Born near Vancouver, Bubl was back at home for Wednesday night's Stanley Cup final, in which the Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins. Although the millionaire singer was on his way to the airport when the rioting began in the city centre, members of his family were much less lucky: Bubl's grandmother, mother and other relatives were trapped inside downtown's Queen Elizabeth theatre, amid burning cars and brawling drunks. "They were traumatised," Bubl told the Globe and Mail. "They weren't allowed to go into the lobby because they were worried people were going to break the windows."

In the aftermath of the pandemonium, Bubl has launched a newspaper ad campaign asking Vancouverites to come forward with photo evidence of rioters' criminal activity. "Just like everybody else, I was embarrassed, ashamed and angry, and the anger hasn't gone away," he said. He wants to find the people who committed the worst acts ? torching cars, looting shops, throwing bricks. "They're trash," he said. "We have to continue to circulate the faces and names of those guilty parties. Let's get them lots of publicity so that the police can make some arrests."

Bubl has also reached out to Vancouver's chief of police, offering to use his profile ? and even his pocketbook ? to help with their investigation. "The chief was very appreciative," Bubl's manager told the Globe. "He said he was getting tremendous co-operation from the public. And the cops are buoyed up by the outpouring of support from the public."

"I'm disgusted by what the rioters did to the city," the singer said. "[But] it's easy to sit back and complain. Let's do something about it."

Bubl, 35, was recently listed at number five on Forbes's list of the highest-paid musical acts in the world, ahead of Justin Bieber, Paul McCartney and the Black Eyed Peas.

Letter from the President on the War Powers Resolution

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

Dear Mr. Speaker:    (Dear Mr. President:)

I am providing this supplemental consolidated report, prepared by my Administration and consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93 148), as part of my efforts to keep the Congress informed about deployments of U.S. Armed Forces equipped for combat.

MILITARY OPERATIONS AGAINST AL-QA'IDA, THE TALIBAN, AND ASSOCIATED FORCES AND IN SUPPORT OF RELATED U.S. COUNTERTERRORISM OBJECTIVES

Since October 7, 2001, the United States has conducted combat operations in Afghanistan against al Qa'ida terrorists and their Taliban supporters.  In support of these and other overseas operations, the United States has deployed combat equipped forces to a number of locations in the U.S. Central, Pacific, European, Southern, and Africa Command areas of operation.  Previously such operations and deployments have been reported, consistent with Public Law 107 40 and the War Powers Resolution, and operations and deployments remain ongoing.  These operations, which the United States has carried out with the assistance of numerous international partners, have been successful in seriously degrading al Qa'ida's capabilities and brought an end to the Taliban's leadership of Afghanistan.

United States Armed Forces are also actively pursuing and engaging remaining al Qa'ida and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.  The total number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan is approximately 99,000, of which more than 83,000 are assigned to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.  The U.N. Security Council most recently reaffirmed its authorization of ISAF for a 12 month period from October 13, 2010, in U.N. Security Council Resolution 1943 (October 13, 2010).  The mission of ISAF, under NATO command and in partnership with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is to conduct population centric counterinsurgency operations, enable expanded and effective capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces, support improved governance and development in order to protect the Afghan people, and promote sustainable security.  Including the United States, 48 partner nations, including all 28 NATO Allies, contribute troops to ISAF.  These combat operations are gradually pushing insurgents to the edges of secured population areas in a number of important regions, largely resulting from the increase in U.S. forces over the past 2 years.  United States and other

coalition forces will continue to execute the strategy of clear hold build, and transition, until full responsibility for security rests with the Afghan National Security Forces.

The United States continues to detain approximately 1,000 al Qa'ida, Taliban, and associated force fighters who are believed to pose a continuing threat to the United States and its interests.

The combat equipped forces, deployed since January 2002 to Naval Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, continue to conduct secure detention operations for the approximately 170 detainees at Guantanamo Bay under Public Law 107 40 and consistent with principles of the law of war.

In furtherance of U.S. efforts against members of al Qa'ida, the Taliban, and associated forces, the United States continues to work with partners around the globe, with a particular focus on the U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility.  In this context, the United States has deployed U.S. combat equipped forces to assist in enhancing the counterterrorism capabilities of our friends and allies, including special operations and other forces for sensitive operations in various locations around the world.  The United States is committed to thwarting the efforts of al Qa'ida and its associated forces to carry out future acts of international terrorism, and we have continued to work with our counterterrorism partners to disrupt and degrade the capabilities of al Qa'ida and its associated forces.  As necessary, in response to the terrorist threat, I will direct additional measures against al Qa'ida, the Taliban, and associated forces to protect U.S. citizens and interests.  It is not possible to know at this time the precise scope or the duration of the deployments of U.S. Armed Forces necessary to counter this terrorist threat to the United States.  A classified annex to this report provides further information.

MILITARY OPERATIONS IN IRAQ

Since the expiration of the authorization and mandate for the Multinational Force in Iraq in U.N. Security Council Resolution 1790 on December 31, 2008, U.S. forces have continued operations to support Iraq in its efforts to maintain security and stability in Iraq, pursuant to the bilateral Agreement Between the United States of America and the Republic of Iraq on the Withdrawal of United States Forces from Iraq and the Organization of Their Activities during Their Temporary Presence in Iraq (Security Agreement), which entered into force on January 1, 2009.  These contributions have included, but have not been limited to, assisting in building the capability of the Iraqi security forces, supporting the development of Iraq's political institutions, enhancing the capacity of the ministries of Defense and Interior, providing critical humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to the Iraqis, and supporting the U.S. diplomatic mission.  The United States continues its responsible drawdown, in accordance with commitments in the Security Agreement, to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq by December 31, 2011.  The number of U.S. forces in Iraq at this time is approximately 45,000.

MILITARY OPERATIONS IN LIBYA

As I reported on March 21, and at my direction, consistent with a request from the Arab League, and as authorized by the

United Nations Security Council under the provisions of U.N. Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973, U.S. military forces commenced operations on March 19, 2011, to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and address the threat posed to international peace and security by the crisis in Libya and to protect the people of Libya from the Qadhafi regime.  The initial phase of U.S. military involvement in Libya was conducted under the command of the U.S. Africa Command.  By April 4, however, the United States had transferred responsibility for the military operations in Libya to NATO and the U.S. involvement has assumed a supporting role in the coalition's efforts.  Since April 4, U.S. participation has consisted of:  (1) non kinetic support to the NATO led operation, including intelligence, logistical support, and search and rescue assistance; (2) aircraft that have assisted in the suppression and destruction of air defenses in support of the no fly zone; and (3) since April 23, precision strikes by unmanned aerial vehicles against a limited set of clearly defined targets in support of the NATO led coalition's efforts.  Although we are no longer in the lead, U.S. support for the NATO based coalition remains crucial to assuring the success of international efforts to protect civilians and civilian populated areas from the actions of the Qadhafi regime, and to address the threat to international peace and security posed by the crisis in Libya.  With the exception of operations to rescue the crew of a U.S. aircraft on March 21, 2011, the United States has deployed no ground forces to Libya.

MILITARY OPERATIONS IN EGYPT

On January 31, a security force of approximately 40 U.S. military personnel from the U.S. Central Command deployed to Cairo.  Although this security force was equipped for combat, this movement was undertaken solely for the purpose of protecting American citizens and property.  A security force remains deployed to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and will remain through July 4, or until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed, if earlier.  This security force is separate from, and in addition to, the approximately 693 military personnel that constitute the U.S. contingent of the Multinational Force & Observers present in Egypt since 1981.

MARITIME INTERCEPTION OPERATIONS

As noted in previous reports, the United States continues to conduct maritime interception operations on the high seas in the areas of responsibility of each of the geographic combatant commands.  These maritime operations are aimed at stopping the movement, arming, and financing of certain international terrorist groups.  A classified annex to this report provides further information.

U.S./NATO OPERATIONS IN KOSOVO

The U.N. Security Council authorized Member States to establish a NATO led Kosovo Force (KFOR) in Resolution 1244 on June 10, 1999.  The original mission of KFOR was to monitor, verify, and, when necessary, enforce compliance with the Military Technical Agreement between NATO and the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (now Serbia), while maintaining a safe and secure environment.  Today, KFOR deters renewed hostilities and, with local authorities and international institutions, contributes to the maintenance of a safe and secure environment.

Currently, 22 NATO Allies contribute to KFOR.  Eight non NATO countries also participate.  The United States contribution to KFOR is approximately 800 U.S. military personnel out of the total strength of approximately 6,000 personnel.  The principal military task of KFOR forces is to help maintain a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement.

I have directed the participation of U.S. Armed Forces in all of these operations pursuant to my constitutional and statutory authority as Commander in Chief (including the authority to carry out Public Law 107 40 and other statutes) and as Chief Executive, as well as my statutory and constitutional authority, to conduct the foreign relations of the United States.  Officials of my Administration and I communicate regularly with the leadership and other Members of Congress with regard to these deployments, and we will continue to do so.

Sincerely,

BARACK OBAMA

Quote of the Day: Obama's Plan to Ruin Medicare

From Michele Bachmann, explaining President Obama's plan to kill off Medicare:

I think very likely what the president intends is that Medicare will go broke and ultimately that answer will be Obamacare for senior citizens.

Well, that would certainly explain why Obama pushed so hard for a healthcare reform bill that, according to Medicare's actuaries, had the following effect: "The financial status of the HI trust fund is substantially improved by the lower expenditures and additional tax revenues instituted by the affordable Care Act. These changes are estimated to postpone the exhaustion of HI trust fund assets from 2017 under the prior law to 2029 under current law."

Readout of the President?s Meeting with Special Envoy Lyman

Release Time:
For Immediate Release

President Obama today met with Ambassador Princeton Lyman, his Special Envoy for Sudan, to discuss the status of mediation efforts to end the political and humanitarian crisis in Abyei and the humanitarian crisis and violence in Southern Kordofan.

The President expressed deep concern over the violence and the lack of humanitarian access, and he underscored the urgent need to get back to cooperative negotiations to enable full and timely implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, including peaceful resolution of the future status of Abyei and the Two Areas.

Ambassador Lyman updated the President on the recent meetings Secretary of State Clinton had with the parties during her trip to Africa.  President Obama told Ambassador Lyman he is following the situation closely and gave his full support to Ambassador Lyman’s work to press for a successful conclusion of the negotiations to achieve a withdrawal from Abyei and a cessation of hostilities across the region and to support the emergence of two viable states at peace.

President Obama noted the important contributions towards peace made by Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and African Union Panel leader Thabo Mbeki.

Special Envoy Lyman plans to return to the region this month to help translate political agreements into lasting and credible security arrangements.  In a message to Sudan's leaders, the President said they must not throw away the opportunity to move toward the promise of greater peace and prosperity.

Auslogics Disk Defrag 3.2 gets smarter, faster

auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it's now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system's hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program's defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there's a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power -- so scheduled operations don't kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

opera 11.10
The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera's built-in email client -- as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!
