Yuck: Yuck ? review

(Mercury)

It's hard to believe that Yuck, a London band fronted by 20-year-old Daniel Blumberg (formerly of the effervescent Cajun Dance Party, who burned brightly but faded away after one album in 2008) are so young. This is praise in that their shoegaze-reviving debut album is sophisticated enough to imply years together as a band, and their fuzzed guitars don't preclude gleamingly sharp melodies. But it's also criticism, because they sound so directly indebted to Sonic Youth, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr et al. Resist playing spot-the-reference, and it's a richly satisfying slow burner of a record.
