Geoff Woodcock writes: Some years ago Robert Tear (obituary, 30 March) was performing in Elgar's Dream of Gerontius in Leeds Town Hall with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. In the rehearsal he became completely animated, virtually took over the orchestral direction from the conductor, Meredith Davies, and gave the most wonderful performance of the tenor solos. After going down into the body of the hall, he told our then chorus master, Edmund Walters, that he could not manage that intensity more than once in a day! His passionate commitment was unforgettable.
