Daniel Miller launches Mute

November 1978: Number 16 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of indie music

For Kraftwerk-loving futurists who found the spirit of punk more appealing than the music, this was the real revolution. A cheap synthesiser, a tape recorder and a garbled retelling of JG Ballard's Crash were all 27-year-old Daniel Miller needed to record Warm Leatherette and release it as the Normal. Such was its popularity that cassettes from aspiring bands began arriving at his flat, and suddenly his label was a going concern ? one that would become an indie titan.
