The ascent of Umm Kulthum

1946: Number 10 in our series of the 50 key events in the history of world and folk music

Umm Kulthum, the greatest female singer in Arab music history, fully emerged as a superstar in the mid-40s, thanks to collaborations with the likes of composer Riad al-Sunbati, who set the religious poem Salou Qalbi to music for her in 1946. Come the revolution, when her songs were taken off air, General Nasser reportedly asked: "What, are they crazy? Do you want Egypt to turn against us?"
