DeKalb Judge Barbara Mobley Shames Her Profession

The heat generated by public investigation of allegations into her shameless misdeeds got to be a little too searing for DeKalb County Judge Barbara Mobley.

So this week, Mobley quit her $150,000 post. And for the good of the people of Georgia, Mobley will never be allowed to seek, request or accept an elected or judicial office in the state again.

To accept such a harsh punishment, you know Mobley was worried the state's Judicial Qualifications Commission that was investigating her case had the goods to convict her of the laundry list of charges against her.

Mobley is accused of using state employees for personal business, trying to illegally influence a child-support case of a male companion, improperly running vehicle tags of citizens and lying to the commission's chief investigator.

A state report said Mobley posted signs on her courtroom door of who could and could not enter her court proceedings. She also directed her bailiffs to ask members of the public in her courtroom to identify themselves and state their business for being there.

Mobley clearly didn't get the concept of "open court.'

Aside from treating the people's court as her own, Mobley showed she wasn't above sticking her hands in the public till, according to the state investigators.

Mobley was accused of using public dollars to purchase a church robe. She also faced charges that she spent $25,000 in taxpayers' money traveling to conferences in Jamaica, Panama and the Virgin Islands.

Because Mobley, who was elected to state court in 2005, agreed to step down, results of the commission's investigation will remain sealed. She will also keep her pension.

If I were a taxpayer in the state of Georgia, I would be displeased that the public will never learn for certain whether Barbara Mobley was the poster girl for unethical, unseemly judicial conduct that the list of allegations paints her to be.

But the fact that Mobley chose to quit her job instead of fighting to protect her reputation tells me all I need to know.
