This calypso-influenced synth-pop is a delicious concoction
Therapies Son ? aka 19-year-old Californian Alex Jacob ? appears to be like any other faceless musical project for a well-connected teen with access to production software. Fears are compounded by the fact that his MySpace features bleached-out photos of beaches and stylish young people relaxing in the sea. So far, so chillwave. However, his new EP, Over the Sea, is almost baroque pop ? all elaborate string flourishes and off-kilter signatures. The opening track, Touching Down, opens with faint choral harmonies before Jacob's croon slowly takes over and then suddenly the whole thing segues into calypso-influenced synth-pop. It's a delicious concoction that elevates him above typical genre classification.
