Follow-up to For Emma, Forever Ago reportedly appeared on Apple-owned digital store a month before its release date
Did iTunes accidentally leak Bon Iver's new album? As the singer-songwriter's new LP appears on filesharing sites, there are reports that an Apple employee, not some piracy-minded hacker, was behind its alleged premature release.
Bon Iver's self-titled second album ? the follow-up to his critically hailed For Emma, Forever Ago ? is not due until the end of June. But its first single, Calgary, went on sale on Tuesday (17 May) ? and according to Rolling Stone magazine, it wasn't just Calgary that became available at the iTunes Store. It is claimd the entire LP was listed for purchase on the digital music store where fans could allegedly download ? and share ? the unreleased LP.
iTunes declined to comment on the allegations, and if there was indeed an error it has since been fixed. However, the service has previously been accused of accidentally leaking music ? in 2008, with the Raconteurs' Consolers of the Lonely album, and in 2009, with a record by Kelly Clarkson. The problem may reflect the difficulties in dealing with music in such volume: the Apple-owned digital store is the No 1 music retailer in the US, and has sold more than 10 bn songs since 2003.
