Jason Solomons with all the latest gossip from the Cannes film festival
The 1920s get set to roar again
Cannes films set the bar for the months to come. Trash, as ever, has been trying to stay on trend and reckons the 1920s are back. Marion Cotillard looks amazing in her selection of cocktail shift dresses in Woody Allen's time-travel comedy Midnight in Paris, while Brnice Bejo, enchants in cloche hats and flapper dresses in silent-era pastiche The Artist. Given that Baz Luhrmann is filming The Great Gatsby, I can feel a Jazz Age revival coming on. My other tip is bikes. As Olympic fever will take over next year, the Dardennes here had lovely Ccile de France in Le Gamin au Vlo, and I hear of plans for two British cycling films: James Erskine is recounting the life of Italian Tour de France winner Marco Pantani and Shane Meadows is making a biopic of 1960s British cyclist Tom Simpson.
Another quiet night
Cinema against Aids charity body amfAR celebrated its 25th year and the life of its founder Elizabeth Taylor with a quite spectacular event at the ever-glamorous Hotel du Cap. Mischa Barton was at my table and, having just made a creepy kid movie called The Sibling, is worried about being typecast as a scream queen. Michelle Rodriguez spilt wine on her dress. Rosario Dawson chatted with Kanye West and neither minded when I interrupted to see if Kanye had any movie plans. "Personally, I do, but I got to find someone who'll put me in one first," he laughed. On the way to the loos, I slalomed past Goldie Hawn and Jane Fonda, swerved Karl Lagerfeld and Roberto Cavalli but stepped on Ivana Trump's gown.
Then nice Dev Patel let me meet more famous people, such as Gwen Stefani. Dev's still going out with Freida Pinto and has just finished filming with Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench for John Madden's The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. As I sat down again to watch Uma Thurman auction off a pair of Swarowski-encrusted shoes, Naomi Campbell snagged her dress on my chair. I feared a clobbering, but she just laughed. Next Courtney Love got up and sang, and then Boy George came on and Brooke Shields shouted at people to bid more money. Two people paid ?500,000 each to play tennis with Prince Albert of Monaco, followed by a swimming lesson with his fiancee, Charlene Wittstock. Sometimes in Cannes, the movies aren't fantastical enough.
